Mountain Frost Hat- Free Pattern

Mountain Frost Hat Pattern, Over The Apple Tree

I ran into Joann's looking for something totally unrelated to yarn and then walked out with more yarn! I've been trying to destash my yarn collection not add to it. There were a few balls of this Thick & Thin yarn on clearance, how could I just leave it there? If you follow me on Instagram, you know I've been focused on creating hats and scarves for Operation Gratitude for most of this year. You can read more about that here. Once in a while, I come across a project or a yarn that inspires me to drop what I'm doing and start something else.

Disclaimer! I'm not a super experienced knitter and have never written a knit pattern before. I just do what works for me and roll with it. I looked at some other patterns using this yarn and their cast on numbers were all over the place and way higher than mine. I don't think I knit very loose, but beware, you might have to adjust your cast on number to get the right size. My hat fits an adult woman. I didn't use the whole ball of yarn.

Hat Pattern
This is a basic beginner knit pattern.
  • 1 ball Buttercream Collection Thick & Thin Yarn from Joann's (Super Bulky)
  • Size 15 (10 mm) straight knitting needles
  • yarn needle for finishing
  • optional pom pom for finishing
Cast on 40
Rows 1-3 Knit across entire row. This creates the ridge at the bottom
Row 4 Purl across
Row 5 Knit across
Continue alternating Purl and Knit rows so that all the knit stitches are on one side of the hat and all purl stitches are on the other side. Work hat until it measures about 7 inches or more depending on how big or slouchy you want it. End with a purl row. When you achieve the length you want, move onto decrease rows.

Decrease rows
1.  Knit 6 stitches, K2tog. Repeat across
2.  P2tog, Purl 5 stitches. Repeat across
3.  Knit 4 stitches, K2tog. Repeat across
4.  P2tog, Purl 3 stitches. Repeat across
5.  Knit 2 stitches, K2tog. Repeat across
6.  P2tog, Purl 1 stitch. Repeat across
Leaving a long tail, cut yarn. Attach yarn needle to tail and use the needle to pick up the stitches left on the knitting needle. Pull tight and cinch stitches together to form top of hat. Turn inside out and stitch the seam of the hat together. Tie off yarn, weave in ends.

Pom Pom
Fur pom poms are more popular than ever and can be bought online or in stores. But, it's super easy and cheaper to make your own!

  • Get some faux fur, a quarter yard is plenty and will make multiple pom poms.
  • Cut a circle for the size pom you want. I like 6" and I use a bowl flipped upside down to trace as a guide.
  • Using a needle and some heavy thread, stitch around the circle
  • Pull tight, but before you close, stuff with polyfil
  • Tighten the thread and stitch closed until it's secure
I like to use a piece of yarn to secure it to the hat. You can knot it or tie in a bow so that it's removable for wash.
