Frozen madness continues! This Elsa inspired hair idea is all over the internet on crowns and on hats but I couldn't find a pattern for exactly what I wanted. After looking around, I found a great free crown pattern. I changed it up a little so that I could add the hair and I'm sharing it with you!
Some months back my daughter was going to her friend's birthday, which happened to be a Frozen party. Her friend (also our neighbor) has gorgeous red hair. She inspired my Princess Anna Hat pattern. Well now it's her older sister's birthday, also Frozen theme, and what better to make than something inspired by Elsa?Instructions:
I used the Toddler Princess Crown pattern from Hatting Madly Crochet found here and modified it a little. You must visit Hatting Madly Crochet and reference this pattern, the changes I made are listed below.
The suggested starting chain for this pattern is is 84. It states in pattern, you can adjust beginning chains by multiples of six. I reduced the size because I wanted it to fit pretty snug(for a 7 yr old) since I was going to add hair and I didn't want it falling down. Originally I reduced to ch 78, put the whole thing together and still felt it was too big. Oh NOOOO! I sure did take the whole thing apart and started over. Don't mind me and my OCD!
Red Heart Yarn Super Saver(hair is Aran, crown is a turquoise blue, don't know exactly because this was in my stash not labeled)
Hook 3.75(original pattern says 3.5, but this is what I had)
US crochet terms
Ch 72(white yarn), join to first chain
Row 1: ch1, sc across in white, join(72)
Row 2: Change to blue, ch1, hdc around, join
Row 3: ch1, sc around, join
Row 4: ch1, hdc around, join
Row 5: ch1, sc around, join
Row 6: begin V stitch(row 3 of original pattern)
Row 7: option 2 shell(row 4 of original pattern)
Row 8: join to top of beginning chain, sc in same, sc, hdc, ch2, sl st in first ch, hdc in next stitch, sc, sc across the top of shell. Skip over the sc in center of shell from previous row and continue across top of next shell(sc, sc, hdc, ch2, sl st in 1st ch, hdc, sc, sc) Join and tie off.
Cut strands of yarn for hair twice as long as desired length. This will be folded in half. The length will depend on how long you want your braid. The length I cut was approximately 75-80 inches(you can trim this later). I know Elsa's hair isn't this long, I just thought it was fun to make it super long. Also, think about when you pull the hair to one side for the braid. You'll want to make the strands that are far away from the braid longer. That way the end of the braid won't be as uneven and you'll have less wasted yarn to trim.
Take two strands of the yarn and fold in half, giving you the center point. Insert hook through two loops at the base of crown. Grab the two strands folded at the center point and pull up. Now pull the rest of the yarn up through loop, pull tight. I started doing two strands in every stitch but it was getting way too thick. I thinned it out a little by pulling just one strand of yarn through about every 3rd or 4th stitch. It's up to you how much hair you want.
Now just twist and braid hair. It's very helpful to have a head to put this on while you're styling! I secured with a rubber band(a real rubber band, not an elastic hair tie) this way it's very secure but I could take it out and make adjustments if needed. Snowflakes are sequins I found at Michael's, sewn on with needle and thread.

ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful pattern . Love it :)
ReplyDeleteLoved it! It was very easy to follow. I just decided to do a braid on side instead of all the hair around the edge. I think my granddaughter is going to be really happy with it. I'm making her a matching cape out of satin.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad you tried it and liked it! I love hearing from people! I want to make another for my Etsy shop but the thought of cutting out all that hair hair again is making me hesitate!
DeleteI made this for a little girl I take care of, she is moving out of state. It was fast, easy and turned out so cute. I can't wait to give it to her. I know she is going to love it. Thank you so much for the pattern.
ReplyDeleteHi Danielle! I'm so glad you like, thank you for your comment!
DeleteThank you so much for sharing this tutorial! I've used to to help make a Wednesday Addams hat with braids coming out of it. I gave you credit in my post about the hat I made.
ReplyDeleteHa! Cool project! Thanks for sharing:-)
DeleteFirst off, thank you so much for sharing your pattern! Super fun to make and easy to follow.
ReplyDeleteAre there any tips that you can give on twisting and braiding the hair? I am having difficulties getting the hair to stay "twisted" in the front where it should almost mask the seam where to hair is attached.
I did it by actually putting it on my daughter's head to "style". I just grabbed a section, twisted it up and then kept adding small sections at a time. I had to play with it a couple times before I got it how I wanted it. Glad you liked the project!
DeleteDoes anyone make these to sell? I do not knit or crochet but wish I could. They are adorable and I have so many cute little nieces that would love them
ReplyDeleteI do not sell these in my Etsy shop. Dealing with all that hair once was enough for me! I have seen plenty of these crowns on Etsy from other artists though.
DeleteAny of you ladies know how a guy who doesn't crochet can buy one of these for his 4 year old niece? Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteI don't sell this in my shop but lots of people do. Head over to Etsy.com and search crochet Elsa crown.
DeleteThank you kindly, as soon as I posted, I realized I was just being lazy and started googling. Didn't find long before I found this:

Thanks though for the inspiring post which led to my Christmas present order for my niece :) God bless you
Thank you so much for posting this pattern. It is gorgeous and the direcions and pictures just really help out :) Thank you soo much.
ReplyDeleteI made this for my daughter to complete her Elsa Halloween costume.. Turned out great! She loves it!
ReplyDeleteThis looks fabulous and I'm thinking of making this for my neice for Christmas.
ReplyDeleteI only have one question, Does the weight of the braid drag down that side of the crown? I am just a little worried that it would pull the crown down.
Many thanks
I don't think weight is a problem. Acrylic yarn is pretty light weight. In the instructions I say that I used two strands of hair for each stitch and then thinned it out a little but putting only one strand about every 4th or 5th stitch. You could thin it even more if you want. I also made the crown fairly tight so it wouldn't fall down. Depending on the size of her head, you could adjust that as well.
DeleteThanks for this. I bought some yarn today, so here goes... :)
DeleteDo you chain up at the beginning of the rows?
ReplyDeleteHow long did it take approximately
ReplyDeleteHonestly, hard to say. I went through some trial and error when I made this, figuring out exactly how I wanted it. Depending how much free time you have, I think you could do it in one sitting. The crown part is the easiest. Measuring, cutting and tying on all that hair is what felt like it took forever.
DeleteHow many skins for the hair
DeleteDepends how thick and long you want it. I used over half of one Red Heart.
DeleteHi! Beautiful job! I'm just not sure I understand row 6 & 7? Are you just repeating row 3 & 4? It says "Row 6: begin V stitch(row 3 of original pattern)
ReplyDeleteRow 7: option 2 shell(row 4 of original pattern)". Just not sure. Can you please clarify?
If you look under where it says "Instructions" I talk about how I used a pattern from Hatting Madly Crochet and made a few modifications. To make sure the designer of this pattern I worked off of gets her credit, you must reference her original pattern by clicking the link. So rows 6&7 of my Elsa crown come from rows 3&4 of the Hatting Madly Crochet crown pattern. Hope this helps!
DeleteHow much yarn did you have to use for this pattern?
ReplyDeleteI didn't actually measure it. I just made one of these crowns last week and the blue for the crown is a small amount. Depending how thick you make the hair, you'll need close to a whole skein of red heart.
DeleteThis is SO cute! My daughter's birthday is in April, and she has requested a Frozen party, so I am making this, and some other Frozen stuff, for her. I just wanted to point out that Row 1 does not say to join at the end of the row. The chain before says to join, and each row after says to join, but this is left out of the instructions for Row 1. I should have listened to my instinct and joined, but I didn't, and now there is a whole in my work. I am not upset, though, because I know how to fix the hole. You may want to consider adding in the "join," so that beginning crocheters don't get confused. :)
ReplyDeleteI *love* this pattern, over all! I can't wait to see my daughter's face when I give this to her. It worked up SUPER fast and fairly easily!
I love it!
ReplyDeleteI know you used row 3 and 4 of the original pattern, but since you used option 2 for the shell did you use row 5 from the original pattern? Or did you replace row 5 from the original pattern with your row 8?
ReplyDeleteI made this for my granddaughter and she was thrilled! Thank you for such an adorable pattern!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing this tutorial :)
ReplyDeleteReally helpful.. I love knitting and my next hat would be like this
I love this so much! Planning to make for my niece. This might already have been asked but how much wool is needed? :)
ReplyDeleteI love this pattern!!! I'm a beginner hooker and am following it pretty easy but I do have a question and I'm wondering if you can clarify. When we go to the designer pattern that you linked to it mentions to begin the vstitch and at the end in parentheses it says the first vstitch will be ch4, hdc..so do I do that after joining the previous row then skip 3 and then do the hdc, ch2, hdc?
ReplyDeleteSo row 5 you join to the top of the first stuck of that row. To start the 6th row chain 4 and hdc in the same stitch ch as your join. That forms the first V. Now skip 2 and in the 3rd do the regular V of hdc, ch2, hdc. Continue with your V's to the end.
Deletejust a quick question - I am going to do this for my just turning 4 yr old - the Hatting Madly pattern is for a 3 yr old but you say you found that too big for your 7 yr old? How many chain do you suggest I start off with? I'm not a competent crocheter so not keen to wing it - thanks
ReplyDeleteI would go ahead and do the 72 chain I started with. I wanted it to be a little snug to be able to stay on with the weight of the hair. The original pattern wasn't designed to hold weight. My daughters is a little small for her age so I wouldn't worry about it. After you do the chains measure it on the child's head and if you need to adjust, just increase or decrease by 6
Deletethe last row im having a difficult time with the point. it doesnt look like the pictures and idk if i did it right. is there any clearer pictures you can show me
ReplyDeleteYou ch2 and slst into the 1st chain you just made. Slst doesnt go in stitches from previous row.
DeleteDo we skip a stitch in row 8 so that we can work in the center of the shell?? I am really loving this pattern...and almost finished with the crown! Can't wait to show this off on Facebook
ReplyDeleteThank you for this free pattern! My daughters LOVE theirs. It took a few hours to complete (only because I am a busy mommy of 6). Very easy directions! I also added some sparkle and jewels with hot glue.
ReplyDeleteSuch a great project! Thank you for the free pattern. It was easy and only took a few hours (would’ve taken less time with less children around)! My daughters both love it, I’ll have to make an extra or try the Anna one. I added some jewels and sparkles to be extra. ;) THANK YOU!
ReplyDeleteHi I didn't know what to do with Rows 6 and 7. Could you clarify.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much.
Judy
