This Disney's Frozen, Princess Anna inspired crochet hat is easy to make and is a great gift for the holidays or a Frozen birthday!
I found this great Rohirrim Bonnet pattern from Vallieskids and thought it was a great starting point for a Princess Anna Hat. Full credit for the original bonnet goes to the original designer however, I rewrote the pattern to reflect the changes I made. I wanted it to be shorter in the back and longer in the front. I also added more femininity with the shell edging and flower details on the side. I never write down patterns for other people to read, so I hope what I did is clear. If not, please feel free to ask questions.
H(5mm) Hook, worsted weight yarn(Red Heart: Dark Orchid & Blue)
Purple yarn
Row 1) ch 61, dc in 3rd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn(59)
Row 2-6) ch 2, dc in next dc from the previous row and in each across, ending with your last dc in the top of the ch 2 from the previous row(59)
*Every row will begin and end his way with the last stitch in the top of chain from previous row
Row 7) ch 2, 2dc in next st, dc in each across until second to last stitch-2 dc in second to last, dc in last(61)
Row 8) ch 2, dc in each st across(61)
Row 9) ch 2, 2dc in next st, dc in each across until second to last stitch-2 dc in second to last, dc in last(63)
Row 10-12) ch 2, dc in each st across. Tie off Purple(63)
Black Yarn
Row 13,14) ch 2, *skip first st, dc in next st, dc in skipped st(forms an X), repeat from * across to last, dc in last st. Tie off Black(31 X's)
Blue Yarn
Row 15) ch1, *3dc in next st, sk next st, sc, skip next st, repeat from * Do not tie off blue yet.(16 3dc groups)
*Update: I've had a lot of questions and comments about the stitch count coming out wrong, especially when you get to the X's. I've added photos of the beginning and end of each row to show you how I did it. I'm considering the ch2 at the beginning of each row as the first DC although it isn't included in the stitch count in parenthesis. Rows end with DC into the top of ch2 from previous row.
-Fold bonnet in half and sl st with purple yarn the base of the purple section together, this will form the back of the hat. Weave in ends
-Pick back up the blue yarn, ch1 and sc along the bottom of hat. Tie off and weave in ends.
TIES: Measure six long strands of yarn(approximately 20-22 in), pull halfway through the bottom front of hat, braid and tie knot at end.
FLOWERS: Magic ring, ch2, dc, ch1, sl st, four times, tighten ring forming four petal flower. Leave long string to attach onto hat. Use contrasting yarn, knotted for center of flower.
GREEN CROCHET EMBROIDERY: tutorial found here
This pattern was designed for a 4-6 years child but because of the style, one size fits most children. You can make bigger by adding rows to the purple section after row 12.

ReplyDeleteGlenna @ My Paper Craze
What brand of yarn and what are the names of the colors? (specifically the purple and blue)
ReplyDeleteRed Heart Super Saver, Purple is Dark Orchid for sure but I can't remember if the blue one was Blue or Royal Blue, I'd have to get back to ya after I double check.
DeleteWhat size hat does this make?
ReplyDeleteBecause of the style it's kinda child size, one size fits all. However, you could add rows to make larger(see in comments above for more specifics)
DeleteI posted my finished bonnet on your Facebook page :) But I made it Elsa.
ReplyDeleteI love it Tiffany and I love that you shared it with me!
DeleteI would love to see the Elsa version!!

ReplyDeleteThanks I'll check it out!
DeleteTies say. Measure long strands. What is the measurement?
ReplyDeleteYou know what, I just kinda hold it up to the hat and see how long I want the ties to hang down. It's about 20-22 inches, then after you braid and knot, trim the ends.
DeleteIs this UK crochet terminology or US crochet terminology? Thanks
ReplyDeleteUS terminology:-)
DeleteHow many stitches would be in rows 2-6 then? Would it be 60 if you count the first chain 2 as a DC?
ReplyDeleteYou're right I was counting the wrong way. I will fix it, thanks for letting me know!
DeleteThank you for getting back to me. So you do not count the chain two as the first double crochet correct? Sorry for all the questions, I am a beginner :)
DeleteAs far as the number of DC in each row, do the number I have listed. So for row 2-6, DC across and your 59th DC will end up in the top of the ch2 from the previous row. If you still need help you can email me and I will send you a close up picture.
DeleteI love the pattern! So adorable! I am making this and have finished the first Black row - coming to the end pattern states to *across to last, dc in last st. I have 31X's and there is not an empty stitch open to perform a dc in last st as specified. Please help - not sure how to continue. thanks!
ReplyDeleteHi Kim! So all my rows(including the X rows) end with a DC in the top of the chain2 from the previous row. If you don't have enough space you may have forgot to do one of the increases in rows 7 or 9 like I do sometimes. If you already used that space I would just throw the last DC in the same space as the first DC of the last X. You are going to sc around this edge anyway so if it's not perfect, it shouldn't really be noticeable. Hope this helps!
DeleteI LOVE this pattern. How would I make this so it would fit an adult??
ReplyDeleteHi Kaitlyn, all you'd have to do to make a bigger hat is increase the number of beginning chains by multiples of 4 and then add rows on to the purple section.
DeleteMade this hat tonight. Only took 2 hours. Great pattern. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteLove this hat. I've seen a million anna hat patterns, but this has made me put up my current project and start this hat today. my daughter will love it. Thank you so much for posting the pattern!
ReplyDeleteWould anyone know how to make this fit a 1 yr old? Would I just use a smaller hook?
ReplyDeleteDid you figure out the one year old size, l need to make one too?
DeleteYou could try a smaller hook. You can also decrease the number of beginning chains by multiples of four, that way the shell edging g will still come out even.
DeleteThank you Soooo much for this cute pattern, I made one for a 9 yr. old an now I have a friend who wants me to make one for 1 yr. old, an two for 3 yr. old, an 2 for 5 yr. old, but I think the side would be to long an wide for 1 yr. and maybe 3 yr. olds, do you have different sizing for smaller ones, I just added row for older girl. I hope you have this figured out as I'm going to be crocheting a lot before Christmas, as she also wants a Minion an Elmo too, it would be great to have other sizes for this darling pattern. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteThis hat size should be fine for 3-5 year olds. For the one yr old you might want to make a little smaller, depends how tight or loose you crochet.
DeleteGood morning, Laura! I just love this pattern and so does my little granddaughter. This is the hat she picked after perusing the internet of all the Anna hats. I made it for her 5th birthday and just posted on my blog with a link back to you. Thank you for sharing your talent!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.gratefulprayerthankfulheart.com/2014/12/frozen-princess-anna-hat-cape-mitts-for.html#more
Kindly, Lorraine
HI Lorraine! I'm so happy you and your granddaughter like the hat and I really appreciate the link back. Thank you!
DeleteHow did you attach the flowers to the hat? I'm new to crochet and figured out the rest, just not that part.
ReplyDeleteWhen making flower I left a long tail of pink yarn. Stitch the flower on hat with yarn needle.
DeleteHi! Great pattern! I have finished the purple section but I can't figure how to make the point at the crown of the hat and before I cut and tie off I want to make sure I didn't miss something. :)
ReplyDeleteAfter purple, go on to black section, then blue shell section. Fold in half inside out, join purple yarn back on and slip stitch the two purple edges opposite the the blue shells together. This will form the back of the hat, creating the point on top. Hope this helps!
DeleteThis is so cute. My granddaughter loves frozen. This would be perfect for her.
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! in the process of making, just finished the purple section and held it on my 2.5yr old and thinking it's a bit small for the 4-6 range. maybe I crochet tighter? Do you have a gauge measurement at all? Again, thank you so much!
ReplyDeleteSorry no, I haven't checked the gauge for this project. It's very easy to adjust the size to your needs though. Thank you so much for visiting my site!
DeleteHow much of the purple do you slip stitch to form the back of the hat? One inch? Two inches? I woke up after crocheting the hat last night, and sewed the whole purple seam, and that's not right because I have no back of the hat edge???...
ReplyDeleteWhen you finish the purple black and blue sections fold horizontally and sl st the bottom of the purple section where you began, along the original chain.
DeleteThank you for sharing your pattern! My girls love them! https://instagram.com/p/zu1K0ulTeQ/
ReplyDeleteI make hats for children going through chemo and this is definitely going on my list of hats to make. Thank you so much for a wonderful pattern
ReplyDeleteThat's fantastic! Thank you for you comment!
DeleteIs they a way to download this pattern please. Have three little niece that are obsessed with Frozen. They have the yarn pick out and now I would love to have the pattern. Please.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
Hi Sara. Sorry no, I don't have it in a downloadable format at this time.
DeleteIs they a way to download this pattern please. Have three little niece that are obsessed with Frozen. They have the yarn pick out and now I would love to have the pattern. Please.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
I love this hat! This was my first project from a pattern and it was awesome! Mine looks great and I'm so proud of it! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteHi Lindsey, thanks so much for leaving a comment! This was the first patterned I've shared so it's good to hear it was easy enough to follow.
DeleteThank you for posting this. I now have another Yule gift for my little Disney princess.
ReplyDeleteWhat should the width of the purple part measure?
ReplyDeleteMy first row of purple comes out to be between 19 and 20 inches.
DeleteThanks, what about after you finish the 12 rows of purple? What should that measure?
DeleteI don't have that measurement without remaking the hat. As long as you do the increases as the pattern says, it will come out fine.
DeleteHi this is so cute! I am working on this now. Do you have any gages? Suggested length each row should be? So I know if I'm doing it too loose or too tight. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteOk, I just crocheted the first row of purple and mine comes out between 19 and 20 inches.
DeleteThis turned out adorable. :) I stitch tightly, so I used a J/6mm hook to compensate. It definitely isn't big enough for a six year old, but does make a great toddler size. For a six year old I would need to make it 16 rows instead of 13, and 12 ch's longer at the start.
ReplyDeleteI made a doll-sized one as well - 28 ch's long to start. :)
Gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteWhat size is the hat? (Circumference of the child's head) I have a granddaughter that is petite.
ReplyDeleteThank you Candy
cjham383@yahoo.com
This hat was sized to fit a small child, about kindergarten age. The measurements of finished hat when laid flat are: top to bottom along back seam-9", top to bottom along front scalloped edge-10", from back seam to front edge-7.5" Size of finished hat may vary depending on your tension. The size can easily be changed by started with longer or shorter chain or by adding or subtracting rows.
DeleteHello, I want to make this beautiful Anna hat you created as a Christmas gift for my granddaughter. Can you please tell me what amount of yarn it took for the purple part? It isn't listed anywhere in your directions. I found the color, but it's not Red Heart brand. If you could tell me if you used one or two skeins and what the yards of yarn per skein is, I'd greatly appreciate it! Thank you!!
ReplyDeleteI wrote this pattern years ago and haven't made one of these hats for almost as long. I actually have no idea of the yardage. I know I used much less than a full skein of Red Heart
DeleteI made this pattern fir my granddaughter for her winter hat day she likes it very much.
